The Well Engineering framework sets out the vision for Well Engineering in PDO; “to consistently have the most competent and competitive well delivery and life cycle maintenance capability in the industry in all areas where we operate”

To realize this vision, technical professionals and leaders who are competent and motivated to work as a team in an environment must be developed. This cultivates excellence in technical skills, teamwork, innovation, and delivery, with the goal to continuously improve bottom-line performance.

This will be achieved through a structured approach to competency-based development which is designed to develop our staffs’ technical, people, and commercial skills. The Integrated Development Program (referred to as IDP), consists of coaching, assessment, classroom training as well as exposure to practical experience, and validating the experience of the individuals through ROUND I and ROUND II exams. The IDP will help our staff to acquire the competencies required to be able to assume responsibilities in either or both of the Wells Disciplines, Well Engineering and Completion, and Well Intervention. Achieving the various milestones and gaining relevant practical experience is a prerequisite for many of the field and office-based positions that the company has on offer.

The Integrated Development Program (IDP) illustrates the initial phases of Well Engineering and/ or Completion and Well Intervention skills and competency development during the formative years of our Well and Completion and Well Intervention Engineers.
The aim is to help them build a sound technical and commercial competency foundation in the well delivery process they can work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
With the help of this program the Graduate will acquire:

  • An awareness of the tools and equipment and basic discipline skills of Well Engineering to enable to optimize the time spent at the well site and introduce the WELLS Distance Learning Package studies
  • Initial training encompassing an overview of the EP business, including an appreciation of how the various skill pools (both subsurface and surface) contribute to the hydrocarbon extraction process
  • Periodic L&D events introduce and develop new skills, such as interpersonal skills, project management, and commercial awareness.
  • Well, site exposure, developing competence, and experience in the management of the execution phase of well delivery through one on one coaching by experienced hands.
  • Coaching and successful completion of ROUND I/ROUND II competence exams

We urge you, the Graduates, coaches, and supervisors to play your role within the program.

PDO uses a Graduates Development Program to ensure that company personnel has the skills and competencies required to carry out their duties in a safe and efficient manner without compromising quality. The Integrated Development Program, which includes the Graduates Development program, covers the tasks, topics, and milestones that are required for the graduates to become fully competent well engineers.

Objective

The objective of this Guideline is to provide the framework for effective and efficient development of graduate intake through a structured and monitored Integrated Development Program, which will help all involved fulfill their roles within the Competence-based Development Scheme. The framework puts the onus to drive his own development on the individual Completion and Well Intervention Engineering Graduate and it gives the coaches guidelines and tools to monitor the progress of the Graduates assigned to them.

Within the Competence-Based Development, we have identified the skills required in the various positions that the Wells Discipline has on offer – be they office or field-based. Our Well and Completion and Well Intervention Engineers are expected to formulate their own Personal Development Plan (PDP) so that they can develop towards the desired Wells positions during their careers.

Scope

This Guideline explains the various phases of the structured Integrated Development Program, it outlines the requirements that the Graduates have to fulfill in order to progress to the next step within the program; it clarifies what is expected from the Graduates, the coaches, and the supervisors.

It furthermore explains the learning aides, notably the ROUND I/ ROUND II Distance Learning Package and the related competence exams and milestones.
The Appendices contain Task and Project sheets that the Graduates have to complete during their training. Supervisors find guidance on how to evaluate the performance of the Graduates under their supervision.

Although the program is biased towards Well Construction, the principles used are equally applicable to all other disciplines within the Wells Function.
