On December 6, 2025, a devastating explosion rocked the Shams Ltd. explosives plant in the Kogon district of Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region. The blast, which occurred at 9:40 a.m., ignited a fire that sent plumes of smoke into the sky and left families and communities reeling.
The factory, which supplies explosives used for developing new mining deposits across Central Asia, employed 30 workers in the affected warehouse. According to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, four of those workers were killed, while four others suffered injuries. Emergency crews battled the blaze and successfully extinguished it by 10:27 a.m., but not before the loss of life and the scarring of survivors.
Government officials have labeled the incident an accident and have established a commission to investigate the cause. The commission will assess safety procedures at the plant and provide urgent assistance to the victims’ families and those injured. Shams Ltd., founded in 2019, plays a critical role in supplying explosives to mining enterprises across Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The plant’s role in powering regional economic development makes the tragedy even more poignant.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of rigorous safety protocols in high‑risk industries. Explosives facilities must adhere to strict operational guidelines, including regular equipment inspections, employee training, and emergency preparedness plans. The blast at Shams Ltd. serves as a stark reminder that even a momentary lapse can have devastating consequences for workers and their families.
As the investigation unfolds and the victims’ loved ones seek answers and support, the tragedy at the Shams plant should galvanize industry stakeholders to prioritize safety. Lives depend on it. We mourn the four workers who lost their lives, stand in solidarity with those injured, and urge a renewed commitment to workplace safety across Uzbekistan and beyond.
