The blast triggered a fire that gutted part of the building and even a nearby large tree, prompting the deployment of multiple fire tenders to bring the situation under control. Local residents reported that the explosion was sudden and so intense that a factory wall collapsed and the asbestos roof was blown off. Workers who sustained burns were quickly evacuated and admitted to hospitals in Baruipur and Kolkata for emergency treatment.

One of the survivors is said to have suffered burns over 90% of the body surface area.
